Off to the doc's

Doctor's appt.

Well, the adoption people want to see if my family has typhoid or some other disease that would make us unfit to adopt... silly, since I have two munchkins already and they don't seem too interested to take them away.

Oh well, now you see the violence inherent in the system.

And with the 8.7 earthquake yesterday, there will likely be many more orphans... and childless parents. The most horrible thing I can imagine is to lose a child. They are a little piece of you... (or a big piece of you) There is so much time, energy, and love invested in the little tikes that there is probably not a stronger bond we humans understand except for that to your creator. I'm sure that's how God is affected by the loss of his children... but that's another blog for another day.

Twist of Irony

: I'm in the process of building a blog server for work. Something to aid in communication between a world-wide virtual team. RSS feeds and talk-back make Blogging a shoe-in for this. I suppose the ironic part is that I have no experience with blogging except for this portion of blogspot. I mean, I read Slashdot and many other news sites, but blog-server admin? zilch. And I'm starting to see why I've stayed away so long.... I started off with the three promising ones included with My Favorite Distro (MFD), Ubuntu: Scoop, Blosxom and the Python equivalent pyBlosxom.

Scoop appears to be beyond my relative commitment level, since I couldn't make it work easily out of the box... or perhaps it's just a little too "embedded" or complete. I moved on to pyBlosxom, because it seemed simple. It plugs into any web server allowing Python, so Apache works just fine. Doesn't matter whether you're running Apache 1.x or 2.x, it just works.... sorta.

I've not played with Blosxom, which is really rather stupid, since it's written in my most recent love-language: Perl. I guess I understand Python enough to modify each file for appropriate file layouts, although having to do so is rather irritating. I suppose that's the cost of inline configs, which help performance since the config information is non-persistent.

The problem I've had with pyBlosxom is a matter of plugins. Which ones to I want and how much configuration do I have to do to each. Beyond that, the fact that yesterday their documentation Wiki went south (403 Forbidden) and today doesn't exist at all. Not a good answer. My team lead saw the site I put up and is content with it, so long as I get the TalkBack section working.

DEFCON!

I just got word from my boss that I can go to DefCon/BlackHat! Woohoo! Last year it "appeared too dark" for our corporate involvement... but I have been working him down ever since. I've even offered to go under a different company name. So the only question now is what color hair, or no hair?

Certificate Authorities

Decisions, decisions. To AD or Not to AD. That is the question. Whether 'tis nobler to go with somewhat familiar or something distinctly more powerful. Not sure. Obviously Microsoft's CA has the political route covered. But there are some needs which stem beyond "the politically correct" route... and to tell you the truth, Microsoft is slowly losing the political advantage.

Moral Issues

Riddle me this: November's election brought about an "amazing discovery" that many Americans vote according to Moral Issues. *WOW* What a concept! I would venture that _all_ people vote their moral conscience. Whether or not that conscience should be considered moral or not is dependent upon the individual.

Particularly amusing was the fact that those considered to vote for moral things were simply assumed to be Republican... The "Religious Right" might primarily vote Republican, but to basically indicate that moral issues are only important to Republicans would seem like it should have made many Democrats irrate! I haven't heard a complaint yet.

What I *have* heard are the "pretty words" for selling to religious folk, from the most unlikely candidates. Even Hillary Clinton, who I personally believe sold any vestiges of soul she may ever have owned a long time ago, is now spouting Bible verses and the word "God" is found in her addresses to the public. Unfortunately for her, those to whom it matters have seen her mettel for some time and of course she's now pissing off those who like her. When did we get so integritously broke? What ever happened to politicians being elected *because* of their moral character, their intelligence, and _their_own_beliefs_? I suppose they died out about the same time as the trusted news. Now we have politicians who get elected *despite* those important aspects of self. Their convictions change according whatever will get them elected.

Doctor's Policies

My doctor's office has a 10minute late policy, after which they will attempt to bill you for a missed visit. I don't know when the last time I spent less than that waiting for a doctor. I was 15 minutes late today, due to miscommunication (I was precisely on time for the supposed appointment) and they made me wait over a half hour before telling me they couldn't see me. At least they told me they would not attempt to bill for this one... but I am still a bit upset. I took off two hours of my day to be there.

Eye Doctors

Well, the missed doc's appt. leaves me a little time to get my contacts checked out. They've been doing wierd things since my last new set of lenses. Eye Doctor's are so much nicer than GP's. Probably something about the pace of life differences.

Linux Classes!

My boss also agreed today that since we are requiring more and more use of the Linux Operating System I should put together an Intro to Linux class. Wahoo! I think I'll leave now and work on that. Adios.
